Ted Cruz was born in Alberta, Canada to an American woman and a Cuban refugee. The question therefore is whether Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen. There is no question that he is an American citizen, allowing him to run for Senate, but running for the Presidency could be difficult. His father, who later became a citizen, was not a citizen at the time of Cruz's birth. Thus we arrive at the question: who is a natural born citizen. Many liberals have pointed out that conservatives want Ted Cruz as President, but wanted to see President Obama's birth certificate. They point to this as a hypocrisy, but in reality it is not. The President has continually and repeatedly avoided showing the American public his birth certificate. When he finally did, the legitimacy of the birth certificate was called into question because of several mistakes on the certificate. Ted Cruz has shown his birth certificate, and can now go through the proper means to learn if he can legitimately seek the office of President, something President Obama refused to do. Conservatives would not have a problem if the President had been honest and not played the game of 'hide and seek' and went through the means to ensure that he could run for President. All conservatives wanted was evidence that President Obama could legitimately become President. President Obama refused to allow that discussion to take place. What irritated conservatives was not so much the place of the President's birth, but his refusal to have the discussion and be honest with the American people. Others even point out that while it appears Cruz would meet the requirements, the President, if he were born in Kenya, would not. (Obama's mother may not lived five years in the US after turning fourteen before the birth of President Obama.) Many lawyers looking at Cruz's position claim that Cruz would likely be granted the rights of a natural born citizen and thus could run for President. This will likely be seen down the road, as many conservative groups would love to see Ted Cruz as President. Perhaps he could reverse the damage given to us by our current President. Yesterday Ted Cruz announced that he would renounce his Canadian citizenship, if he still had it. "Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship," Cruz said. "Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator, I believe I should be only an American.” Either way, all conservatives admit Ted Cruz is an amazing Senator and we wish Senator Cruz the best of luck. Regardless of whether he can run for President, we hope he will continue in American politics for a long time.
